Dad: A Hero

Life

A girl's first hero

How dads inspire and support a daughter's development

By JOANNE RICHARD

16th June 2009,

Hey, dads, what you sow now, your daughters will reap later.

How a woman feels about herself as a woman goes back to how dad treated his little girl, report experts.

"Behind every great woman, you will find her dad" -- that's if he was an engaged, present, involved dad, says Dr. Mary Jo Rapini.

"If dads are able to admire their daughters achievements, character and interests and not their looks, the daughter will grow up to be confident and self assured. She will choose men who treat her with the same admiration and respect as her dad did," adds Rapini, a psychotherapist and author.

According to Rapini, a dad has so much power over his daughter.

"If he gives her gifts and focuses on her looks he will raise a girl who is more materialistic and thinks love and affection comes in a gift box.

"If he praises her looks all of the time, he will raise someone who loathes herself and is constantly checking to make sure she looks OK in a mirror -- we do that enough anyway.

"If he focuses on her abilities and interests he will develop a daughter who is more self assured, confident and understands leadership."

Studies show that dads give girls 90% of their self-esteem before the age of 12, she says. "What this means is that girls that grow up without a dad in the home, or one who abandoned them, are always going to be a little bit less confident and sure of themselves than peers who grow up with a dad in the home."

According to Rapini, an involved, engaged dad will be viewed as the first man she ever loved, and someone who loves her unconditionally. "Unlike mom -- who many daughters have emotional fights with -- dads don't get into all of the drama and are more accepting of them.

"Dads also have a way of redirecting a girl when she is being overly emotional. He can make her laugh and help her see the situation is not as bad as it appears. The daughter looks at dad as the type of man she wants to someday marry," adds Rapini, co-author of Start Talking: A Girls Guide for You and Your Mom About Health, Sex or Whatever.

Dads need to be sure not to pull away from daughters during the teenage years, adds Dr. Venus Nicolino. "Many fathers feel uncomfortable with transformation from tween to teen -- she's no longer daddy's little girl.

"A father needs to be there, emotionally available at all times but especially when he feels himself wanting to pull away during her teenage years. An emotionally available father can be the stabilizing force for a young woman. The little voice inside her that says, 'I love you no matter what', " says Nicolino, a relationship expert.

She adds that the best thing a father can do for his daughter is to love her mother so that she will witness what to expect from the men in her life, and what she should not have to put up with. "Having a father who loves her mother makes her more likely to go on to choose a man who will truly love her."

Do

Dr. Mary Jo Rapini suggests these five dosfor dads to positively impact his daughters:

- Focus on your daughter's talents and make note of them.

- Focus on times you see her being respectful, confident, compassionate and compliment her.

- Help her/guide her in creating her vision, dreams and interests.

- Tell her she can be or do anything she puts her mind to.

- Talk less, do more with her, listen to her.

Don't

- Be controlling and tell her you will decide what is best for her.

- Tell her she is pretty and say it all the time so she becomes focused on being pretty.

- Tell her she is getting chubby. Really, if you focus on their body you will create a girl with lots of issues and she may never get over them.

- Fight with her mom and be disrespectful to her in front of your daughter.

- Tell her she is not very smart -- "if you do this, I promise she will fulfil it."

Fathers Need Equal Time

Fathers still chasing equal time with children

Caroline Overington | June 04, 2009

Article from: The Australian

FATHERS are among the key groups complaining about the Howard government's shared parenting laws, with many saying the amendments have failed to deliver a 50-50 time split with their children.

A summary of complaints about the law says fathers are bombarding the new Family Relationship Centres, where all separating couples must go before they approach the Family Court, demanding to know why they have not been able to get equal time with their children. As a result, staff at the relationship centres are spending "considerable interview time reducing fathers' expectations, and explaining complex legislation" that never guaranteed an equal split, but was widely thought to have done so.

The summary of complaints also says a cohort of "difficult clients" has re-emerged since the laws were introduced in 2006 and that "complaints about the family law system are increasing because complainants have a new target: the Family Relationship Centres, as well as lawyers, courts, counter staff, legal aid and the Child Support Agency."

There has also been an increase in "relocation" disputes, where one parent wants to leave with the children, and the other wants to maintain a relationship with the children. A major review of the shared parenting laws is being conducted by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, and by the UNSW Social Policy Research Centre.

Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland is waiting for results of these studies before deciding whether changes to the existing law need to be made, or whether a new amendment is needed. The amendment to the Family Law Act was designed to ensure that children had access to both parents after divorce, but is generating complaints from Family Court lawyers and judges and others.

But Wayne Butler, secretary of the Shared Parenting Council, said there was a great anxiety among fathers that the laws would be repealed because they were "an incredible improvement on where we were prior to the amendment".

"The vast majority of cases are being settled well before they get to the Family Court for a determination. People don't read about the thousands of cases that are being settled amicably."

Family Law Council president John Wade this week provided The Australian with a three-page summary of the type of complaints being received by those in the front line of family law.

The summary says "confusing gossip" about the legislation has encouraged fathers to begin negotiations with a claim for a 50-50 time split.

In fact, the laws protect a child's right to a "meaningful" relationship with both parents, that involves "significant" time. It isn't entirely clear what those terms mean and fathers often do not get anywhere near 50-50 time with their children, leaving them feeling cheated.

There are also complaints from mothers who believe the new laws prevent them from moving away from bitter ex-partners, or believe the laws will be used to rupture a settled custody arrangement, or force children to see a violent parent.

Down The Rabbit Hole

This was a comment on the Fathers4Equality site, that I urge you to pass along to your friends and colleagues:

All,

please be aware that 'feminism' is marxism communism repackaged which has been deliberately injected into our society in order to destroy it.

In his final interview before dying from Cancer Aaron Russo repeated his claim that Nick Rockefeller clearly stated the Rockefeller Foundation supported feminism in order to get women into the workforce to increase the tax take for the bankers and to get children into longer term care to break the bonds of the family. Feminism was injected into russia in 1917 with devastating consequences. Our so called 'Family Law' is lifted directly from Russia circa 1917.

The Australian people have been betrayed by our 'guvment'. I am in possession of documents sent to Kevin Rudd, properly notarised and delivered by registered mail describing the fraud of the Australian Government and the legal system. He refuses to do anything about it because he is a puppet. As was Howard and all before him. Your guvment, media, legal, medical, financial, monetary, education systems are ALL corrupt from one end to the other which is why you find it so hard to believe what can be happening. In short there are NO honest people in position of any real power in Australia.

Every single element of authority and power is colluding in the planned destruction of australian society as we know it. Period.

If you want to know just how corrupt this system is try reading this book 'Classified' . { Link } Or try clicking on this link. { Link }

You will find that the 'Commonwealth of Australia' is merely a sovereign registed on the US Securities and Exchange Commission. It is a privatge company held by private shareholder run for profit. And so are out courts. Our courts run under Uniform Commercial Code not Common Law. The fraud is so deep, so pervasive it is mind blowing.

In recent times Thomas Anderson and others have found the remedy for 'Family Law' for men. We are working on getting the word out. So please pass this post along.

Family Court Goes Soft on Parenting Orders

BY NOEL TOWELL LEGAL AFFAIRS REPORTER
12/05/2009 2:09:00 PM
A South Coast mother who was jailed last year for fleeing the state with her child in defiance of a court order has been freed on appeal.
In a landmark decision last September, a Federal Magistrate ordered the woman, who was captured after a 13-month nationwide hunt by Australian Federal Police, to be locked up for six months, saying it was a warning to the nation's warring parents.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, took her 11-year-old son and went on the run in late June 2007 after the court ordered her to allow the boy to spend weekends with his father. She initially took the child from her NSW home to Queensland and from there to Western Australia, where she settled with a new partner and enrolled the boy at school under a new name.
The pair remained hidden in the west, where they were tracked down by the Australian Federal Police after a 13-month investigation.
