Police are considering charging a Markham, Ont., woman with public mischief after she told police her infant son had been abducted in a parking lot by a stranger, when he had just been taken by her husband.

The woman and her husband made a trip to a Costco store near Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue this morning and got into an argument in the store's parking lot. The man left in the car, with the couple's one-year-old son in the back seat.

The woman called police at 9:40 to report a carjacking and child abduction. She described the abductor as an Asian male in his early 20s with dark, black hair. What she didn't tell them was that he was her husband.

“We've come to realize that it's a bit of a misunderstanding between the mother and father of the child,” said York Regional Police Sgt. Laurie Perks.

A helicopter team, canine unit and several squad cars were dispatched to search by air and ground for the vehicle. Police even considered issuing an Amber Alert to track down the child. The vehicle and child were located just before 11 a.m., fewer than 20 kilometres from the store. It was only then that police realized the child was with his father. They are now investigating why the child's mother lied to police.

“Certainly public mischief is something to consider if it wasn't something we were advised it was,” Sgt. Perks said.
